Apollo's Angels: A History of Ballet

Jennifer Homans, dance critic for The New Republic and former dancer with San Fransisco Ballet and Pacific Northwest Ballet, has written a book on the history of ballet that's receiving lots of acclaim and buzz.  The title of the book is Apollo's Angels.

The New York Times has listed it as one of the ten best books of 2010, and a Times reviewer calls it "the only truly definitive history of the most impossibly fantastic art form, ballet."  Check out these sites on the book and the author:

2010 Back to School Workshop

Our Back to School Workshop was this past Saturday and after several months of planning it was a huge success. The UALR dance studios were packed with dancers and dance teachers from all over Arkansas.

Hip-Hop choreographer Pat-y-o jump started the day with a high energy teacher class leading straight into a hip-hop technique class with our intermediate students. Pat-y-o is recognized as one of the finest choreographers and hip-hop dance instructors around the country. He has headlined the hip-hop master classes for the Dance Teacher/Dance Spirit Dance Convention as well as other various conventions and competitions. He has also choreographed for artist such as Master P.

Andrew Palermo, artistic director of dre.dance, challenged our advanced students with a powerful modern class. In addition to being the co-founder of his NYC based contemporary company with Taye Diggs, Andrew has performed and choreographed in numerous Broadway shows such as Wicked, Aida, and Annie Get Your Gun to name a few.

As teachers and dancers rotated classes they all had the opportunity to learn from these exceptional choreographers and grow in their love for dance.

If you are a dance enthusiast and weren't able to make it to this past weekends workshop be sure to check out the 2010 THEA Dance Workshop in October. Bill Hastings will be sharing his expertise in Jazz Dance. Bill danced for Bob Fosse on Broadway for years and now teaches master classes in New York and around the world. Classes are only $20 and will be held October 9th at the UALR dance studios, and October 10th at the U of A Fayetteville.

DANCE IMPROMPTU

You're invited to a dance impromptu planned for Lamanpalooza at
Laman Library in North Little Rock!

If you have never heard of this before, it's when people break out into a dance, that seems random to everyone around, but has been preplanned.  It is a lot of fun and the dance is very simple, you don't have to be a dancer to do it!  It is very simple and basic movement, nothing to be intimidated about!  The details are below:
There is a rehearsal for Dance Impromptu today at 6:30 at Dance Dynamics on 1308 S. Bowman, across from the Skatium on Bowman.

It would be  really great if you can make it to rehearsal, but if not, we will rehearse again right before we "perform"on friday.

** Friday night, Please be at Laman Library at 6:15 located at 2801 Orange Street off of Pershing. We will meet where the band is set up. If you go to their website lamanlibrary.org, you can also get directions and their phone number is 758-1720.

Trout Fishing begins playing at 7:00 and My Best Day will be performed at approx. 7:15, so we can rehearse and then get in place. Again, please bring friends, family with you!!
